Calheta is located between the south and far-west of Madeira Island and is surrounded by the municipalities of Ponta do Sol and Porto Moniz. A simple 25 minute drive from Funchal or a 40 minute drive from the airport will see you in Calheta, one of the island's most loved regions and classified as a getaway location because of its harmonious and tranquil characteristics. There is so much to please the eye in Calheta and also plenty do to such as hiking, long levada (canal) walks, adventure and nautical sports with much to discover in terms of Madeiran art and history too.

Calheta is a region that prizes itself on its agriculture.  In many other cities in Madeira alike, fresh vegetables and fruits can be expected here which gives you a great opportunity to savour the natural products which Madeira is so famous for.

Restaurants, snack-bars and cafés in this region are large in number but sometimes a little hard to find especially in areas such as Prazeres, Arco da Calheta or Paul do Mar but it's a question of asking around. When looking in the right places you can get some fantastic menus specializing mainly in the gastronomical Portuguese specialities of meat and fish. Delicacies in this region include Espetada the so-called 'meat on a stick', Frango Assado (roast chicken), Entrecosto (spare ribs), Polvo à Escabeche (marinated octopus), Espada com Banana (scabbard-fish with banana) and grilled tuna fish or shellfish. Desserts such as passion fruit pudding and tropical fruit salads will mainly include fresh fruit grown in this area.

Calheta has many restaurants which are highly acclaimed for their good service and generous meals at value for money prices, making them well worth searching for!
