Santana is one of Madeira Islands most notable municipalities offering both breathtaking views and raw Madeiran culture. It is even said to have something magical about it. Found in the North Eastern part of Madeira between São Vicente and Machico, Santana is most famous for its charismatic triangular thatched houses, majestic green lands, hiking grounds and exciting levada (mini-canal) walks such as Caldeirão Verde or Caldeirão do Inferno.
Eating out in Santana is a great chance to experience authentic and rustic Madeiran cuisine. Restaurants here are experts in serving up some of the most conventional regional dishes be it a simple snack or a 3 course meal. Depending on the restaurant, you can get one or two offering more creative menus perfect for those wanting something a little more refined but the majority of Santana's restaurants will offer the very typical yet perfectly prepared fish and meat dishes served with fresh vegetables grown in Santana's fertile lands. Specialties include homemade stews or soups, Espetada, steaks and Espada. You may also want to try the local Pão de Santana, Santana Bread, and the homemade vinho seco, dry wine.
